World Usability Day 2023 in Frankfurt: A look back at a day full of UX insights

On November 9, 2023, our Frankfurt office was transformed into a lively gathering place for UX enthusiasts to celebrate World Usability Day, with over 60 participants engaging in professional discussions and creative workshops. A big thank you goes to the Frankfurt regional group of the German UPA for organizing the event, especially to Juri Wan, Anna-Katharina Flügge, Thomas Jackstädt, and Jelena Brandic.
Design Sprints: Integrating UX from the start
In their presentation, “Using Design Sprints to Influence UX Where It Counts: Right from the Start,” Vitalij Malahov and Anna Slotty from Skopos Nova highlighted how important it is to integrate UX into the product development process from the very beginning. They argued that Design Sprints, which are inherently user-centered, are ideal for incorporating UX at every stage of the process. The later UX is integrated, the more detrimental it is to the final product. A key aspect of their presentation was the importance of limited timeframes, based on Parkinson’s Law, which states that work expands to fill the time available for its completion.
To be successfully integrated into Design Sprints, they emphasized the importance of factors such as opportunities, time, skills, and, in particular, trust. They suggested starting with a short session to identify challenges and prioritize solutions, thereby building trust from the outset.
The experts also introduced the FUN formula:
- F: Recognizing friends and turning enemies into friends
- U: Keep users engaged
- N: Show some empathy 🙈
They made it clear that it isn’t necessary to tie up a large team for the entire duration of a Design Sprint. The first two days are crucial, followed by regular, brief check-ins.

Risk mitigation in design & UX: using data and empathy to make better decisions
In his presentation, Thom Bartsch from User Testing focused on risk mitigation in design and UX. He highlighted that 55% of product teams often make decisions without a sufficient data foundation, and 63% of prototypes are not tested with real users. This leads to costly mistakes and user frustration.
To avoid this, Thom suggested placing a greater focus on users and involving all departments in the discovery process, not just the research team. Empathy, through active listening and understanding user needs, plays a key role in this.
He introduced the QXScore, a metric for measuring customer attitudes and behavior that provides valuable insights into the user experience. Thom also emphasized the importance of calculating “fail costs” to better assess the financial consequences of design and UX decisions.

Design x Code: Collaboration for a better user experience
In his presentation “Design x Code,” Eduard Rausch, Senior Product Designer at HelloDesign, focused on the importance of an efficient handoff between design and development. He identified core problems such as poor communication, a lack of shared understanding, conflicts between design and code, and information gaps or overload. Eduard emphasized that the key to solving these problems lies not in technical tools, but in human interaction and adherence to core principles.
His strategies included:
- A strong user focus to ensure that all decisions are based on the needs of end users
- Fostering creativity through collaboration, for example through brainstorming, creating explanatory videos, and collaborative wireframing, which has proven to be efficient and robust
- Experimentation and prototyping to quickly visualize and test ideas
- An iterative approach that allows for flexible responses to change
Eduard highlighted the challenges in the Scrum process, particularly when design precedes the development phases, which often leads to time constraints and a lack of opportunities for review. He suggested that the entire team work through all five phases of Design Thinking together, which ensures seamless implementation with minimal documentation requirements.

Workshop: Unbeatable collaboration with service blueprints
Ezgi Ucar, UX Consultant at BLUPRNT, and Sebastian Jung, Senior Experience Consultant at BLUPRNT, led an interactive workshop titled “Unbeatable Collaboration with Service Blueprints.”
They guided participants through the process of creating service blueprints and demonstrated how this powerful visual representation of processes can help improve collaboration within teams and break down barriers. They emphasized that by working together on a service blueprint, teams are able to better understand and optimize processes and workflows, with the goal of creating a better product and ultimately delivering a better user experience.

Flora Maxwell, Senior UI Designer at UX&I, spoke in her session “Creating a Nice Brew” about team synergy using coffee as an analogy. She shared ways to improve collaboration by focusing on the human factors that make for successful teamwork.
Flora emphasized the need to make individual project goals transparent and to use them to formulate a shared vision. She explained that it’s important to be mindful and vulnerable in order to create a positive and productive work environment. An environment where everyone feels heard and valued. As Flora put it: “It’s about empowering people and maximizing the benefit for them.”

World Usability Day 2023 was a day full of valuable insights and informative discussions. It was a great opportunity to network with like-minded people and gain new perspectives on UX and product development. We look forward to next year!
