Digital experience & usability consultant: Leading UX in the age of AI

AI can build you a prototype in minutes. But it won’t tell you whether it solves the right problem. That’s a question you’ll have to answer, whether you’ve studied UX or not. That’s why UX&I and artop have jointly developed this part-time training program.

What does the Digital Experience & Usability Consultant training program entail?

“Digital Experience & Usability Consultant” is a part-time training program offered by artop, an institute at Humboldt University in Berlin, developed in collaboration with UX&I. Over the course of ten months, experienced professionals from product teams learn how to design human-centered digital products, including those that incorporate AI. The program begins on February 12, 2027, in Berlin, and upon completion, participants receive a certificate from artop.

The training program is led by Hias Wrba from UX&I and Knut Polkehn from artop. You can find all the details, a breakdown of the course content, and the registration form on the artop website.

UX for AI, not just AI for UX

Many AI training courses show you how to use AI to analyze, generate, and prototype more quickly. You’ll learn that here, too. But there’s also a more challenging question: How do you design products in which AI plays a role in decision-making? And which decisions must remain in human hands?

Will this replace UX? No. The scope of responsibility isn’t shrinking: it’s being spread across more people. We see this in our projects. According to the Figma AI Report 2026, the majority of developers surveyed now also do design work, and 90% consider design to be at least as important as it was before AI.

Anyone building AI products needs more UX, not less.

Who this training program is for

  1. This role is a good fit for you if …

    • you have a background in product management, development, design, QA, or marketing and have relevant professional experience
    • You’ve been in charge of UX for a long time, just without a method or a mandate
    • you want to justify your decisions to your team and management
    • You’re already working in UX and want to expand your skills for AI products
  2. Line drawing of a person holding a large map with a route and a location pin, next to a backpack and a plant

This role may not be a good fit if …

    • you’re looking to get started in UI design without any professional experience
    • you’d like a short workshop on AI tools
    • If you need a purely online format: The modules take place in Berlin

How the training program works

A project that will guide you for ten months

A project that will guide you for ten months

You’ll work in a small group on a topic of your choice and apply what you learn directly in each module, with guidance from mentors. This way, what you learn becomes part of your daily routine rather than just theoretical knowledge. By the end, you’ll have a project that showcases your decision-making skills.

The entire process, from research to testing

The entire process, from research to testing

You’ll walk through the entire design process from start to finish using a single, end-to-end case study: understanding users, deriving the product vision and requirements, specifying them, creating prototypes, and testing them with real people. You’ll use AI as a tool throughout this process. The foundation is human-centered design in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9241.

Designing products in which AI plays a role in decision-making

A separate module is dedicated to Agentic Experiences. You’ll learn how products with AI components can remain reliable and understandable even though their behavior isn’t entirely predictable, and which tasks must remain in human hands.

Implementing UX throughout the organization

Implementing UX throughout the organization

UX rarely fails because of the method; more often, it fails because of the context. You’ll learn where your organization stands, how to win over stakeholders, and how to deal with resistance. In addition, there are peer groups between modules and fireside chats with external experts.

How do you balance this with your job?

The ten modules are spread out from February through November 2027, roughly one per month, usually on a Friday and Saturday. Two modules last three days, with the first and last days each lasting one and a half days. In between, you’ll work on the project with your small group and meet in peer groups.

Strong arguments for your manager: Each module is designed to be applied to everyday work, and there’s a special rate for companies. Plus, according to the 2026 Bitkom survey, 66% of companies rate their employees’ AI skills as low.

Why UX&I supports this training program

Why UX&I supports this training program

What we see time and again in our projects: UX responsibility is shifting to people who have never been trained for it, and AI is accelerating this trend. That’s why we provide training: within companies through our Product Academy, for years at the artop Institute, and now with this training program, which we developed in collaboration with artop.

In the German UPA’s UX/Usability 2025 Industry Report, UX&I is the most frequently mentioned UX company, and artop is the most frequently mentioned provider of supplementary UX training according to the UXQB. This training program combines both: practical experience from projects and a scientific foundation.

  2. Scope and degree

Ten months, ten modules totaling 168 training hours in artop’s seminar rooms in Berlin, plus approximately 60 hours of practical projects, mentoring, and eight fireside evenings. Participants who attend at least 80% of the training hours and complete the practical project will receive a certificate from artop, an institute at Humboldt University in Berlin.

  3. Costs and registration

For individuals: €9,800 (installment payments available); for companies: €11,800; both amounts are exempt from sales tax. Registration, the contract, and the terms and conditions are handled through artop.

You don’t have to become a designer.

More responsibility within your own team

You’ll keep doing what you’re already doing, but with a systematic approach and the right terminology. You’ll explain why something is being built and become the go-to person for UX in your team. You’ll still be able to build a prototype in minutes. Now you’ll know whether it solves the right problem.

  2. Line drawing of a woman riding a large paper plane with her arms spread wide

Making the transition to a UX role

If you want to focus on UX, you’ll come away with the skills to do so and a project that showcases your work.

  3. Working as a consultant

Here, “consultant” means you advise others on UX decisions and share responsibility for them, internally for other teams or externally for clients.

Questions and answers about the training program

Will AI replace UI/UX?

No. AI delivers designs, prototypes, and code faster, but it doesn’t provide the answer as to whether the right thing is being built. That responsibility remains with people and is shared among more roles. According to the Figma AI Report 2026, 90% of respondents consider design to be at least as important as it was before AI.

What does a UX consultant do?

A UX consultant advises on and is responsible for decisions regarding how a product works for the people who use it, whether within their own team, for other departments within the company, or externally for clients. This includes research, design, testing, and advocating for these decisions to stakeholders.

Who offers the training program, and who issues the certificate?

The training program is offered by artop, an institute at Humboldt University in Berlin, in cooperation with UX&I. artop is the provider: You register with them, and artop also issues the certificate. UX&I developed the training program together with artop and co-leads it with Hias Wrba.

Do I need prior experience in UX?

You don’t need a degree in UX, but you do need professional experience. Experience in UX or related fields such as design, product management, marketing, IT, development, management, or quality assurance is recommended.

How much time do I need to commit outside of work?

Expect about one module per month, usually on Fridays and Saturdays. In addition, there are about 60 hours of project work in your small group over the course of ten months, as well as peer group meetings between modules. You can find the dates above under “The training program at a glance.”

How much does the training program cost, and can my employer cover the cost?

For individuals, the cost is €9,800 (installment payments are available); for companies, it is €11,800. This offer is exempt from sales tax. You’ll need to check with your employer to see if they’ll cover the costs. A good selling point: Each module is designed to be applied to your day-to-day work.

Is the training program conducted online?

The modules take place in person in artop’s seminar rooms in Berlin, because small groups, peer groups, and informal get-togethers thrive on direct interaction. The information session, where you’ll get to know the training directors in advance, is held online.
