Since May 2021: artop “UX Thinking” seminar now available online

In response to the pandemic, the “UX Thinking” seminar at the artop Institute is now also being held remotely. The new format, which uses Miro and Zoom, brings with it a number of changes, some of which could become standard practice in the long term.

Since 2018, the artop Institute at Humboldt University in Berlin has been offering a four-day seminar on UX Thinking. The training program, developed by Dr. Herbert A. Meyer (partner at artop) and Mathias “Hias” Wrba (managing director at UX&I), focuses on human-centered product development. The seminar equips product managers, product owners, UX professionals, and software developers to plan and execute digital projects in interdisciplinary teams in an agile and human-centered manner. Through a playful yet ambitious approach, the seminar teaches methodologies, provides inspiration, and clarifies the rationale behind individual methods.

Following the first remote trial run at the Mensch und Computer trade show last fall, the seminar was moved entirely online for the first time this May. Hias Wrba drew on his experience from previous online workshops, for example when selecting the tools. Miro served as the seminar room, and Zoom was used for video communication. “Interaction is, of course, somewhat more limited in front of a screen. You have to keep that in mind, because networking and learning from one another play a major role in our concept. Knowledge transfer, on the other hand, works just as well as it does in person. Sometimes you’re even more productive: many things go faster. And it’s easier to improvise on Miro, especially on a small scale, for example when it comes to the methods,” said Wrba. The participants shared this view. They also saw the documentation, which was available to them afterward on Miro, as an advantage. In addition, the seminar was praised as a mini-training session in remote collaboration.

When asked about the ideal seminar format for the future, Wrba reflects: “I think a 50-50 mix of remote and in-person would be perfect. Wait a minute, that’s actually a good idea; we should think about that.” Another remote “UX Thinking” seminar is currently planned for 2022. This October, the training will once again take place as an in-person event.
